Future Executive Opportunities

Below is an outline of future executive opportunities.

I. Spring Elections to the Executive

Every spring the APSS calls for the election of President, Vice-President Communications, Vice-President Finance, and three Executive-at-Large members for the upcoming school year.

Please note the following is by no means comprehensive of the duties, but instead is intended to serve as a guideline. All executive members are expected to attend every weekly or biweekly meeting throughout the school year. Students interested in the positions of President, VP Communications and VP Finance should have experience serving in leadership positions. All interested students should have a genuine interest in ensuring the well-being of the club.

President (1) – The President is responsible for the leadership of the executive and should serve as the primary liaison between the department and the executive. They are responsible for ensuring that events and activities are in line with the mission statement, attending ASSU Council meetings, and arranging meetings. 

Approximate time of commitment throughout the year: +100 hours

Vice-President, Communications (1) – The VP Communications is responsible for ensuring the word about APSS events gets out to students and interested parties. They should have a familiarity with social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), be prepared to send weekly newsletter, and communicate with other course union executives to promote events. They will also work with College Representatives and ensure that they are involved in advisory and communication capacities.

Approximate time of commitment throughout the year: +80 hours

Vice-President, Finance (1) – The VP Finance is responsible for designing the budget, ensuring financial accountability, applying for grants and sponsorship materials, and issuing reimbursements. They should have a high degree of organizational capacity

Executive-at-Large (3) – These three positions are responsible for advising and organizing events. They are expected to organize at least one event per semester, which includes selecting themes, finding speakers, and working with the VP Communications and VP Finance with budgeting.

II. Application-Based Appointments in Spring

Decisions on these positions will be conducted by the President and the newly elected positions. It is expected that work will be done by those appointed over the summer.

Director of Media (1) –The Director is responsible for the creative vision and design of APSS’s events and activities following the current templates. They will be responsible for creating various promotional materials for events through out the year. They will also be involved in both photography and videography of events. The Director will also be involved in the development of certain social media accounts, working in collaboration with the Vice-President Communications. Other duties and responsibilities may be added based on experience and availability. Successful candidate will have past experience working with film and photo editing software, as well as creative design software.

Approximate time commitment throughout the year: varies with experience. 

Associate Director of Media (1) – The Associate is responsible for working with the Director as well as the broader communications team including the Vice-President Communications with the promotion of all events of the association. The responsibilities of the Director and the Associate will vary according to the respective experience of each candidate. However, between the two positions they should be comfortable with both film and video editing software, photography and videography and graphic design. 

Approximate time commitment throughout the year: varies with experience. 

Director of Mentorship (1) – The Director of Mentorship is responsible to organize a program whereby first and second year students are mentored by senior students in the Department. They should have good organizational skills.

Approximate time of commitment throughout the year: ~60 hours

Associate Director of Mentorship (1) – The Associate Director of Mentorship is responsible for assisting the Director in organizing a program whereby first and second year students are mentored by senior students in the Department. They should have good organizational skills.

Approximate time of commitment throughout the year: ~40 hours

Editor-in-Chief of Polis, the Undergraduate Journal (1) – The Editor-in-Chief in responsible for ensuring timely publication of the undergraduate academic journal the compiling an editorial board. They are responsible with meeting the Editorial Board of Directors and reporting in a timely and organized matter of the status of the journal to the executive. Applicants must have experience in editing academic works. 

Approximate time of commitment throughout the year: ~60 hours

Associate Vice-President (1) – The AVP will be  responsible for assisting the VP Communications with their responsibilities, as outlined above, as well as the VP Finance, with their responsibilities, as outlined above. While the AVP will be working with both Vice Presidents, the majority of their time will be spent with the VP Communications, therefore the candidate should be comfortable with communications related work.

III. Fall Elections to the Executive

This is a chance for first year students to be involved on the executive level of APSS.

First Year Representative (2) – First Year Reps are responsible for contributing to the executive with matters concerning advocacy, communications, administrative duties, event organization, etc. They should be enrolled in POL101.

IV. Application-Based Appointments in Fall

This is another chance for students to be involved as a College Representative. 

College Representatives (2 per college) – College Representatives work primarily with the VP, Communications to ensure a high attendance rate at APSS events. They will have the opportunity to organize events, bring concerns of students in their college to the executive, and contribute to the long-term strategic planning of the Association. Please note that this is not an executive position.
